Relationships and Sex Education

Since September 2020, it is statutory for all primary schools to teach relationships education.  So what exactly is relationships education?  Relationships education can be defined as learning about the emotional and social aspects of growing up and is designed to put in place the building blocks needed for positive and safe relationships. Our RSE provision is appropriate for our pupils based on their:

  • Age
  • Physical and Emotional Maturity
  • Religious and Cultural Backgrounds
  • Special Education Needs and/or disabilities

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is about the emotional, social and cultural development of pupils, and involves learning about relationships, healthy lifestyles, diversity and personal identity.  RSE involves a combination of teaching, and exploring issues and values.  At Knop Law Primary School we only provide relationships education.

At Knop Law, the focus is on friendships, family relationships and relationships with other children and adults. In Knop Law, we ensure clear progression and also ensure that objectives are covered in an age-appropriate way, adapted for the needs of pupils with special educational needs and taking into account pupils’ cultural or religious backgrounds.  The objectives outlined in our PSHE curriculum ensure both progression and coverage of all the statutory objectives.

Children begin by being taught what a relationship is and about the importance of respect for others.  From early years, teachers also make it clear what are the features of healthy relationships and develop pupils’ understanding of kindness, co-operation and resilience.  Pupils should understand that positive relationships lead to feelings of happiness and security. This will help them to recognise any less positive relationships they may encounter and they will be taught where to seek support and guidance should they need it.  We also ensure that pupils understand that the principles of positive relationships apply online too.  Through the teaching of relationships education, pupils should have the knowledge they need to report abuse and this therefore supports the safeguarding of children.

Teaching the statutory guidelines means that by the end of primary school we aim for our pupils to have a good understanding in these broad areas:

  • Families and people who care for me
  • Caring friendships
  • Respectful relationships
  • Online relationships
  • Being safe.
